Cherry-Flavored Marijuana

There are so many different flavors of cannabis—have you checked out our grape strains guide?—but cherry is probably one of our favorites. That’s because its tart sweetness is not something you’d expect from your marijuana, which makes it even more of a treat. But how does it get its flavor?

Cherry-flavored marijuana gets its taste, and sometimes aroma, from terpenes. Terpenes are tiny compounds found in marijuana, and they vary from strain to strain. This is why we can have so many delicious flavors of cannabis.

Our Favorite Cherry Cannabis Strains

You don’t have to rely on the red Starbursts to satisfy your cherry cravings (though having some candy around while enjoying your cannabis isn’t a bad call either). These strains are both popular among cannabis connoisseurs and packed with cherry flavor:

Cherry OG

Indica-Dominant Hybrid

Step aside, OG Kush. There’s a new OG in town. Our first balanced hybrid strain, Cherry OG, combines its cherry flavors with a diesel aroma to create a sensory delight for cannabis enthusiasts. Its buds even look like cherries due to their compact, round shapes. Cherry OG is probably not the best strain on our list for beginners, though—it has anywhere from 19-22% THC and just a bit of CBN (1%) too. This potency means if you do try it, you should dose carefully.

Cherry Pie

Indica-Dominant Hybrid

There’s no question what the aroma and flavor profiles of this strain are. This cherry-pie flavored strain comes from a cross between Granddaddy Purple and Durban Poison, two highly popular strains themselves. Cherry Pie, however, has its own fame too. This indica-dominant hybrid ranges between 16%-24% THC and adds a splash of CBD (1%) to its cannabinoid profile too.

Black Cherry Soda

Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

Black Cherry Soda isn’t just popular for its effects, it’s popular for its appearance too. This refreshingly cherry-flavored, sativa-dominant strain produces dense flower buds that have deep purple shades, much like its namesake, on a bed of lighter green. Both great tasting and great smelling, Black Cherry Soda is enjoyed by both recreational marijuana consumers and medical marijuana patients. It has moderate-to-high levels of THC too (18 - 22%), making it relatively beginner friendly.

Cherry Punch

Hybrid

If you could soak marijuana flower in Hawaiian Punch, you’d get this delicious, balanced hybrid strain. Cherry Punch has a sweet, cherry-berry flavor that has a pinch of skunk to it that you’ll notice as you consume it. As a cross between Cherry AK-47 and Purple Punch, you can assume it’s got pretty high THC levels—and you’d be right. Its potency ranges between 23-24% THC.

Cherry Garcia

Hybrid

Not to be confused with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s–though that’s exactly what it’s named after— Cherry Garcia cannabis is a hybrid strain perfectly balanced between indica and sativa. It was created after 3X Crazy was crossed with Animal Cookies, and it has been popular ever since thanks to its sweet, cherry flavor and aroma (though it does have undertones of diesel). This strain has moderate-to-high THC levels - around 18 - 22% - so if it’s your first time partaking, go slow.

Answering Cherry Cannabis Strain FAQs

Flavored cannabis often fascinates cannabis enthusiasts, and our cherry marijuana is no exception. Here are some frequently asked questions we get about this tart-tasting treat:

Are cherry strains indicas or sativas?
Cherry strains of marijuana can be both indica, sativa or a hybrid of the two, depending on the strain. This is because the flavor of cherry marijuana comes from the terpenes in the cannabis.

Are cherry strains exotic?
Whether a particular cherry strain is exotic depends on where you live. Different strains of marijuana are available in different regions of the United States. Because of this, there may be some strains that are prevalent on the West Coast but hard to find in the Midwest. The good news is that if you look for it, chances are you’ll find a cherry-flavored cannabis strain in your local dispensary.

What terpene makes cannabis taste like cherries?
There is no specific terpene that makes cannabis taste like cherries. Rather, it is a combination of terpenes that give cherry-flavored marijuana its sweet, tart flavor.
